Introduction

The ASCE/AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition is all about developing competent civil engineers.  It is intended to be a learning and growing experience for the students involved.

This web site is intended to provide information for competitors, hosts, and judges that will be helpful in having a successful competition experience.  This website has two main parts.

The first part replaces the Guide for Hosts and Judges that was distributed by the rules committee in past years.  This document gives information on what equipment is needed to host the competition and how to approach the competition so that there is a minimum of disputes.  The guide is enhanced with images that should help Hosts and Judges put on a successful regional competition.

The second part consists of some information on common rule violations that will be useful to both judges and competitors.  Unfortunately, some of the learning and growing occurs at the competition is the result of errors in design and/or construction that result in otherwise wonderful entries being penalized or disqualified from the competition.  It is the intent of this web site to provide some insight into common errors seen at regional and national competitions so that they can be avoided.

This presentation is NOT an exhaustive coverage of all the ways that rules may be violated.  Many teams are penalized for infractions of the rules not covered in this presentation.  The idea here is to present the violations that occur on a regular basis.
