Eligibility Requirements

Section three of the rules contains some eligibility requirements for qualifying for the national event.  The basic criteria are:

  • The team must be a part of an ASCE student chapter in good standing with ASCE national.  This means that they are not on probation for failing to submit their annual report or for failure to pay their annual dues.  Contact ASCE student services (student@asce.org) or your conferences representative from the ASCE National Committee on Student Activities (CSA) if there are any questions about a chapter's eligibility.
  • The student chapter must participate in good faith in the conference business meeting.  (This meeting is NOT THE TEAM CAPTAIN'S MEETING!)  Generally this means that only those chapters who are present during roll call at the start of the business meeting are eligible to continue on to nationals.  At the very least, the chapter presidents should be at this meeting.  It is a good idea for faculty advisors to attend this meeting as well.
  • The student chapter must participate in the paper competition at the regional conference.  The paper must meet the criteria set forth by the conference.  The presenter does not have to be a member of the steel bridge or concrete canoe teams.

To make it easier for all chapters to meet these eligibility requirements, it is suggested that the host chapter do the following:

  • Schedule the conference business meeting so that it conflicts with as few events as possible.  Many conferences hold this meeting late in the conference so as to capture comments and ideas based on experience with the current conference.  If this is the case, make sure that there is a definite plan for getting the attendance list to the bridge scorers in a timely fashion.
  • Schedule the paper and/or competitions so that the two do not overlap for any given chapter.  This may be hard to do, but be flexible enough allow the paper presenter to also participate in the bridge competition if necessary.  Small schools often have people who are both paper presenters and on a competition team.

One last thing:  SEND THE OFFICIAL SCORING SPREADSHEET TO THE RULES COMMITTEE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE COMPETITION!  The spreadsheet contains the email address that it should be sent to.  In fact, it will automatically email it's self if you let it.  Invitations to nationals cannot occur until this spreadsheet is sent in!
