Rule 10.2.7-9:  Starting In 2003, the bolts to be used were specifically specified in the rules.  The 2007 version of the rules loosened that specification by allowing teams to select their own bolt diameters.  This continues into this year.  See the rules for the complete language of the rules.  Pay particular attention to the phrase "must not be mechanically altered or modified in any manner."

Common Error:  In the 2003 season there were a number of teams that modified their bolts and nuts contrary to the rules.  There have been questions recent years that lead the rules committee to think that there are still some competitors who would like to modify their bolts!  The bolts may not be ground to a point on their ends.  Bolts or nuts welded to members become part of the member that they are welded to, and by the definition of 10.2.6 may no longer be considered a fastener.
